How do you remove the window crank on a 2001 Volkswagen Golf?

I'm not a strong person, but I was closing the window and heard a popping sound and now the crank turns and turns but the window doesn't move. Is this easy to fix or do I need to go to a mechanic? How do I fix it?

   The regulator cable probably snapped. You need to replace the window regulator. It’s best that a mechanic do it.

   You may have stripped out the gear on the crank, its plastic so it can happen over time. At the “base” of the crank there is a plastic piece that slides out and the assembly will pull straight off. A visual inspection will tell you if that is the problem or not. If it looks fine, then the previous response is the most likely answer.
