How expensive would it be to fix the speedometer in a 98 Volkswagen beetle?

the speedometer dosent clock in right it only will go to like 40 then it dosent move. It also seems to be innacurate in the needle because it moves very freely.

   Hi there!

   That is a common problem to vw’s from 95 to 99.

   The speedometer cluster has gone bad and will need replacing.

   I recommend a dealer replacement. estimated at $300 +

   you could always go to a junkyard. estimated at $100 +
