Is the volkswagen synthetic motor oil like mobil 1?

Volkswagen
nhrule asked:

I have a Jetta in which I get the oil changed at the dealer. They say for me to go every 5000. Miles before another oil change is needed. What would be a motor oil I can use which will be consistant and get 5000 Miles?

    You provided your own answer.

You don’t need Mobil1 unless you have the 1.8t motor. The 2.0 should be fine with a good quality (Castrol, Valvoline, etc.) motor oil for 5k.

Are you positive that they are using synthetic engine oil? You would be paying about $50 for 5 litres and should be a pinkish colour. If the oil on your dipstick is a golden brown colour it is normal mineral engine oil.

If the are using synthetic oil…. yes.. all synthetic oils are basically the same …. but… NEVER MIX SYNTHETIC AND MINERAL OILS

The dealer has advised you of the best course of action in maintaining the oil in your car. The synthetic oil is the same if the technical data on the container reads the same on both. Any difference might NOT be for your car–this is an awful lot to be asking over a lousy oil change that the dealer is doing. Stick to the dealer and good luck
