My volkswagen golf 3, 1993 model makes some knocking sound from the engine compartment when I accelerate?

I have changed the engine mountings suspecting it was that still the sound/noise remains, any one have idea what it might be?

    If it makes it only on acceleration and no other time and happens once like a thunk then I could understand mounts, did you check the front mount underneath? If its consistant, could be several things like transmission, internal engine noise etc. Dont overlook the ball joints and tierods aswell as the upperstrut mounts

    Is it detonation? Maybe you have carbon buildup or other deposits that could be causing it. Try a tankful of premium gas. If the noise disappears or is reduced, then that’s your problem. I’m not sure if this model has a knock sensor — Check with a VW mechanic. If so, perhaps the knock sensor need replacing.

    Having some audio or video might help pin point it. Does the sound change with the RPM’s? If you pop the hood and have someone press the gas pedal you can listen and give a more general location of where the sound is coming from that may help too. It will also rule out suspension/steering related components if it still makes the noise while sitting still.
